What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic services are used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
How Does Chiropractic Work?
When the spine and skeleton are correctly aligned, the pressure and tension gets carried by the bones and joints (frame) of the body. All muscles and tissues attach to this frame. When the frame’s alignment is out, pressure builds up and gets transferred to the muscles, ligaments, nerves and discs. This can result in injured, damaged or malfunctioning tissues. Misalignments may present themselves as symptoms or conditions including but not limited to:
  •  Neck pain and Whiplash
  • Headaches and Migraines
  •  Lower back pain
  •  Sciatica and referred leg pain
  •  Spinal disc injuries including disc herniation
  •  Pins and needles in your hands, legs or feet
  •  Sports injuries
  •  Muscle strains and Ligament sprains
  •  Joint pain/ strain/degeneration
  •  Tendinitis / Tendinosis
  •  Pregnancy aches and pains
  •  Arthritic conditions
A chiropractor is trained to identify areas in the spine and joints where pressure is causing pain. Chiropractors then manipulate the joints which ease pressure and tension on damaged muscles, ligaments, discs and nerves. The body is then in a better position to heal.

Chiropractic care emphasizes the importance of rehabilitating the frame’s ability to maintain its alignment, thereby ensuring optimal support for the body during activities of daily living as well as during periods of stress, both physical and mental. The more support the body has the better it will be able to function.

Treatment techniques vary from the traditional chiropractic adjustments to a more diversified approach such as dry needling and soft tissue therapy. This allows each patient to experience chiropractic care in a way that is comfortable for them.

What Are the Benefits and Risks of Chiropractic Care?
Spinal manipulation and chiropractic care is generally considered a safe, effective treatment for acute low back pain, the type of sudden injury that results from moving furniture or getting tackled. Acute back pain, which is more common than chronic pain, lasts no more than six weeks and typically gets better on its own.

Research has also shown chiropractic to be helpful in treating neck pain and headaches. In addition, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used both by chiropractors and practitioners of deep tissue massage.
